Breathe Fresh, Livonia

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Bad breath can be detrimental to your professional, social, and romantic pursuits, not to mention embarrassing. Fortunately, Dr. James Stewart has the solution.

BreathRx is a specially formulated, professional breath treatment system that conquers bad breath at the source. Each of the unique BreathRx products contains Zytex, an exclusive ingredient with zinc, eucalyptus oil, and thymol. This mixture neutralizes volatile sulpher compounds, which are the main cause of oral malodor.

The BreathRx mouth rinse and breath spray take this step one step further by eliminating bacteria. This makes it harder for plaque to accumulate, preventing your chances of developing gum disease and tooth decay.

In addition to the power of the product itself, BreathRx is the only anti-bacterial mouth rinse that is 100 percent alcohol-free, which makes it safe for long term use.

If you suffer from bad breath and want a solution that works, contact Dr. Stewart at his dental office in Livonia, Michigan by calling (734) 425-4400 .

Regular Checkups with Your Livonia Dentist Can Protect You from Serious Oral and Overall Health Problems

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Youve seen how periodontal disease can lead to arthritis , but this oral condition can also lead to other serious health problems, including Alzheimers disease, diabetes, birth complications, heart problems, osteoporosis, certain cancers, and strokes.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and, therefore, the perfect time to explore just why gum disease can lead to an increased chance of strokes.

A stroke occurs for two reasons: when a ruptured blood vessel or impaired blood flow causes brain hemorrhaging, or when a clot blocks a blood vessel. Dr. Wu, a stroke expert from the State University of New York at Buffalo says that bacteria are to blame. Harmful bacteria enter the bloodstream through the mouth, stimulating blood clotting, damaging the lining of blood vessels, and increasing the risk of stroke.

Additionally, gum disease is twice as likely to cause strokes as it is to cause diabetes, and it is equally as likely to cause strokes as it is to cause high blood pressure.

Gum disease is present in the mouths of approximately 80 percent of American adults, yet many dont even know they have it. Its imperative that you have regular dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months so that I can screen for early signs of this disease and other oral health conditions.

Im Dr. James Stewart , and I invite you to call my dental office in Livonia, Michigan, at (734) 425-4400 to schedule an appointment. My team and I look forward to keeping your smile healthy for years to come.

Stressed out in Livonia?

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Approximately 20 percent of adults clench or grind their teeth to extent of causing permanent tooth or jaw damage. Teeth grinding may be a sign of too much stress, TMJ disorder , or other underlying conditions. While its important to address the core cause of teeth grinding, there are a few things you can start doing right now, even before you visit my office.

Im Dr. James Stewart , a Livonia dentist , and I can help. There are ways to prevent bruxism (teeth grinding) and protect your beautiful smile:

Recognize symptoms: If you have worn or chipped teeth, jaw pain, earaches, and sensitivity to hot or cold, there is a strong possibility that you are grinding or clenching your teeth. You may not even be aware

Relieve stress: When you feel yourself in a stressful situation that is causing you to clench your jaw, take a few minutes to breathe and relax. Try to schedule time to exercise or participate in an enjoyable hobby regularly. Prior to going to sleep, do deep breathing exercises, or hold a warm washcloth against your jaw for 10 minutes to relax your facial muscles.

Decrease caffeine and alcohol: Alcohol and caffeine, especially near bedtime can contribute to teeth grinding.

Train yourself: When you notice that you are pressing your teeth together, stop. Place your tongue between your front teeth to control the clenching. Be careful not to bite your tongue.

Seek help: If you are grinding your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about a night mouth guard. If you are one who grinds their teeth during the day, talk to your physician about ways to control stress or anxiety that may be the cause of your grinding.

Your teeth are meant to last you a lifetime. If you find that your grinding or clenching is causing dental damage or pain, call my Livonia dentist office at (734)425-4400 to schedule an appointment.

TMJ Troubles and Treatment

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Have you heard of temporomandibular joint disorder? I know, it sounds intense. This disorder, also known as TMJ, is usually accompanied by headaches, migraines, earaches, and irritating conditions like a popping jaw. If you have any of these symptoms, its possible that you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from TMJ.

Im Dr. James Stewart , and Im optimistic that I can treat this problem. First, however, it is important for you to know what causes TMJ disorder .

The temporomandibular joints are the two joints that hold your jaw to your skull. A variety of factors, including injury, stress, heredity, and tooth wear, can lead to misalignment of these joints, which places additional stress on the muscles and nerves surrounding them. This can cause pain in the head, mouth, and jaw. Sometimes, neck and lower back pain can also occur.

I have been treating TMJ patients for a long time, so I know how difficult it can be to live and function when youre in constant pain and discomfort. Luckily, Im equipped to treat your TMJ disorder right here in my office in Livonia, Michigan .

To begin your treatment, I ask that you come in for an evaluation appointment. At this evaluation, I can determine if your jaw isnt properly aligned. I will try to physically manipulate your jaw to see how your joints work together. I will ask you about your symptoms and check for tooth wear, as well. If you do have the condition, I will recommend an oral appliance to reposition your jaw to the proper alignment. This appliance will help to alleviate the stress on your jaw joints. With prescribed wear, this appliance will help you reclaim your life from your TMJ condition.

If you are ready to find relief from the pain you are experiencing, I encourage you to call my office at (734) 425-4400. My team and I are here to help you.
